Ashley Mite is a Writer from Clearwater, Florida, United States of America.
- Hi Ashley, how long have you been working as a freelancer now?
I am Ashley Mite and I am a Content Writer and Social Media Writer at On The Map Marketing.
- What inspired you to become a freelancer? Did you think about it for a long time or did your decision come suddenly?
After getting married and having my twin girls, I stopped working outside the home and became a stay-at-home mom. After a while, I yearned to work again because, hey, who doesn’t love having their own money in the bank? I tried multiple business ideas that I could do from home until I stumbled upon a few websites from other freelance writers. I had always had a love for writing since high school especially for poetry and short stories, so the decision came easily to start. I signed up for a course and hence, my career was born.
- How did you gain your first customers?
I haven’t really had many clients. I wrote for a couple of blogs for little money until I started working for the internet marketing agency I work for now.
- Who has been your greatest inspiration?
I have had many sources of inspiration throughout the years, to include my husband and my father, however, my biggest inspiration has been myself. I have always had a love for writing and an imagination to match. So, simply, I wanted an outlet to get my ideas out to the public.
- John Wanamaker said: Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is, I do not know which half. Do you gain your clients by advertising or in another way?
Since I have started working with the agency I work for now, I haven’t taken on any new clients. I have done some advertising in the past but wasn’t very proactive about it. If I do venture for new clients, I usually go out and look.
- Do you hire outsourcing service providers for services, which you believe are a waste of your time?
No, I don’t use any services. I use social media frequently, especially LinkedIn, and hope that clients find me through there.
- How does your typical working day look like? What do you do when you are not working? How many hours/days per week are you working? What do you do in your free time?
I am a full-time mom on top of my writing work so I never stop, my friend even jokes around calling me a “AAA battery”, so if I am not taking care of my three kids or the house, I am usually drafting new social media posts for my clients, writing blog posts, or editing. When I am not working, I like to play mobile games, do some Netflix bingeing, or listening to music. If I really have nothing going on, I like to go to the movies or to the mall.
- What would you do differently if you would start again?
I’m still fairly new at this so I wouldn’t really have much to say on this topic. However, if I could backtrack those months, I would say to myself to just be more patient and to hone your skills a little more.
- Entrepreneurs have many things in common. They read a lot. What about you? What are your favorite books?
I honestly don’t read as much as I used to anymore. However, when I do get a chance to read, I love novels like Stephen King’s IT or a good Anne Rice book. I haven’t spent much time with any motivational books per say.
- What was the best business advice you received? Do you have any advice for other freelancers?
I wouldn’t say that this is business advice that I have received but more so feedback that I have picked up through my time as a writer. Don’t get discouraged with your work if it isn’t received well. Take criticism for what it is, refine your work, and keep going. Advice that I have for other freelancers would be to never knock on a gig in the beginning. When I first started working for the internet marketing agency I work for now, I made very little money. However, I stuck through it and have not only been introduced to new types of work but my pay has gone up as well. If a gig is truly going nowhere, then leave it but give it time first because you just never know.
Top 3 mobile apps on your smartphone?
Facebook, a messenger app I use for communicating for work purposes (Slack), and Netflix.
- Top 3 websites?
I love Netflix, YouTube, and I use Asana almost every day (again for work).
- Your last vacation?
My husband, myself, and my kids all took a vacation down to Miami last year and stayed at the Miccosukee hotel. We both have family that live down there and went for a quick weekend getaway. It was quite fun as the hotel was super nice and comfortable. My husband and I have both lived in Miami for a long time and are familiar with the area so heading to Dolphin Mall was quite exciting as well as visiting our family as well. My favorite part though had to have been the food. South Florida is known for its diverse cuisine and, for me, food is something that can’t be beat…especially Hispanic food.
